What’s Actually Covered in Your Car Insurance? Breaking Down Motor Insurance Policies

Car insurance is a legal requirement in Ireland, but do you really know what your policy covers?

Many drivers assume they’re fully protected, only to discover gaps when making a claim. Understanding the different types of cover - and what’s included or excluded - can save you money and stress.

Here’s a simple breakdown of Irish motor insurance policies so you can make informed choices.

Comprehensive Cover

Comprehensive cover is the most widely chosen option in Ireland because it offers broad protection.

Like all motor insurance policies, it covers your legal liability for injuries to other people and damage to their property. It also includes everything provided under TPFT, plus additional benefits, including:

  • Accidental damage to your own car, even if you’re at fault

  • Damage caused by vandalism

  • Often extras like windscreen repair, personal belongings, and medical expenses

Benefits vary by insurer, so always check your policy schedule.

Third-Party, Fire & Theft

While comprehensive cover is the norm, some drivers opt for third-party, fire & theft (TPFT).

This cover includes everything in third-party insurance plus protection against fire damage and theft. It’s generally chosen for older cars or specific situations where comprehensive cover isn’t necessary.

Third Party

Third-party cover is the legal minimum under the Road Traffic Act. It covers damage to someone else’s property, injuries to other people, and legal costs if you’re sued after an accident. It does not cover your own car. While less common, it remains an option for certain circumstances.

Common Add-Ons & Exclusions

Policies often exclude:

  • Wear and tear

  • Driving abroad without extra cover

  • Unlisted drivers

Optional add-ons can include:

  • Breakdown assistance

  • Windscreen cover

  • Full no-claims bonus protection

  • Personal accident cover

These extras cost more but can provide peace of mind.

Key Takeaways

  • Comprehensive cover offers the broadest protection and is the most common choice.

  • TPFT is available for those who want fire and theft protection without full comprehensive cover.

  • Third-party only meets the legal minimum and is less frequently chosen.

Remember: Always read the fine print as coverage and exclusions differ by insurer. Compare quotes and consider add-ons that suit your lifestyle.
